YOU CAN HELP SUPPORT MEDICAL MISSIONARIES ON THE GROUND IN HAITI
American Baptist International Ministries (IM) missionaries have responded to the immediate medical needs resulting from the January 12 Haiti earthquake. Dr. Steven James, IM missionary in Haiti, and Kristy Engel, IM missionary in the Dominican Republic, have created response teams and ministered to earthquake victims in Christianville and Port-au-Prince .
Engel, a pediatric nurse practitioner, returned to La Romana, Dominican Republic (DR) on January 22, having taken her first primary care medical team into Port-au-Prince six days earlier. Ketly and Vital Pierre, who serve as IM missionaries in Nicaragua , were among that group. Engel is coordinating medical teams from La Romana to Haiti each week, including a team that went to Port-au-Prince on January 26. Volunteer doctors and nurse practitioners are needed for these teams. The volunteers arrive in La Romana on Sundays, travel into Haiti on Mondays, work for the week and return on Saturdays. Engel reports, “There is still a critical need for medical response in this area. We are finding open fractures and wounds as well as many untreated injuries related to the earthquake. I have found most functioning hospitals unable to accept further patients due to lack of medical supplies and personnel to treat them.”
To date IM has released a total of $65,000 of One Great Hour of Sharing funds in response to the needs in Haiti. If you would like to contribute you may make a check to First Baptist Church of McLouth and Mark in the memo line : “Haiti Earthquake Relief.”
Note: Kristy Engel, mentioned above,is one of the missionaries which our Awana Clubs have adopted and supported for the past 3 years. We will continue to pray for her!
BAPTIST MISSIONARY WOMEN PREPARE BANDAGES FOR THOSE INJURED IN HAITI
On Thursday, Feb. 12, members of our American Baptist Women in ministry (ABW) met to prepare, sew, and roll bandages to be sent to medical clinics and hospital in Haiti. These items will be sterilized and then used to help vicitims of the devastating earthquake there. A few weeks ago, Kristy Engel, a nurse practicioner and American Baptist missionary who has been leading medical teams into Haiti each week, said “There is still a critical need for medical response in this area. We are finding open fractures and wounds as well as many untreated injuries related to the earthquake. I have found most functioning hospitals unable to accept further patients due to lack of medical supplies and personnel to treat them.”
In all, our faithful ladies prepared 72 rolls of bandages, which will be used to provide help and healing for those in need. Our ABW women continue to do wonderful, practical work, enabling our missionaries to share the love of Christ around the globe.
